Syracuse's Perez Named Player of the Week
December 26, 2012 - Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) News Release
TAMPA, Fla. - The Major Indoor Soccer League announced today that Syracuse Silver Knights midfielder Bryan Perez had been named the league's Player of the Week for the eighth week of the 2012-13 season. Perez had a five-point night as the Silver Knights took a 16-14 victory against their Thruway rival the Rochester Lancers last Saturday night.
After being held off the board in the opening half, during which the Silver Knights built an 8-5 lead, Perez helped Syracuse hold off the Lancers each time they threatened to try and regain the lead. He opened his account with an assist on Jon Gruenewald's goal to make it 10-7 with 2:49 to play in the third quarter, and then bagged a 3-point goal two minutes into the fourth to give his side a 13-9 lead.
Just over a minute later, Perez set up a 3-point blast for Slavisa Ubiparipovic that would extend the lead to 16-9, giving the Silver Knights the cushion they would need to hold off a late Lancers' rally for their third win against Rochester this season. Perez has had a major impact since being traded to the Silver Knights from the Wichita Wings in November, recording 15 points in five games as Syracuse had won four of its past five games.
Joining Perez on the Team of the Week is his teammate Nelson Santana, who had a goal and two assists for the Silver Knights against Rochester. A member of this summer's U.S. Futsal Squad, Santana has continued his standout play this season, leading all defenders with 25 points and sitting tied for fourth overall with 10 assists this season.
The Chicago Soul also had a pair of players named to the Team of the Week, with Eric Lukin leading their 12-10 victory against the Baltimore Blast on Friday night with a pair of goals, including one from 3-point range. Goalkeeper Jeff Richey also had a standout night, recording 24 saves on 29 shots, to help his side hand the Blast their first defeat of the season.
Milwaukee's Luan Oliveira was also selected after recording the Wave's opening two goals in their 6-5 win against the Blast on Saturday night, while the Wichita Wings' Geison took the final spot after scoring two goals and adding an assist in his side's 10-4 victory against the Missouri Comets on Friday night.
The 2012-13 MISL season continues tonight as the Milwaukee Wave begin a two-game road trip with a visit to the Syracuse Silver Knights at The Oncenter War Memorial at 7 p.m. ET. The Wave then visit the Rochester Lancers on Thursday night at 7 p.m. at the Blue Cross Arena.
Friday night sees the Missouri Comets visit the Chicago Soul as they try to snap their recent run of poor form, with the two sides meeting at the Sears Centre Arena at 8:30 p.m. ET, while the Syracuse Silver Knights make a swing through the Midwest that opens in Wichita against the Wings at Hartman Arena at 8:35 p.m. ET. Syracuse's trip continues in Missouri on Saturday night at 8:35 p.m., while the Wings host the Chicago Soul at 8:35 p.m.
