Charleston Battery News Release
Syracuse, NY- The Charleston Battery fell to the Syracuse Salty Dogs tonight at P & C Stadium by a score of one goal to none in front of 3,321.
The scoreline was a repeat of Sunday evening's loss to Rochester and leaves the Battery with a record of 3-11-4, 13 points last position in the Eastern Conference. Syracuse improves to 5-7-3, 21 points and moves into a tie for 5th position in the Conference.
Syracuse had an early chance in the 2nd minute. Former Battery midfielder Chris Dore was put through at the edge of the 18-yard box. As Charleston goalkeeper Chris Doyle advanced Dore sent a curling lob over the top of Doyle that missed just left of the goal.
In the 16th minute Charleston forward Caleb Norkus played a clever heel-flick into the path of his strike-partner Jesus Martinez. Martinez took a touch then fired a left-footed shot that was saved by Salty Dogs goalkeeper Bryon Foss.
The best chance of the half came in the 30th minute. Battery midfielder Justin Evans fired a pass at chest level to the top of the box. Norkus angled his body, swiveled with a touch, and then hit a left-footed volley that dipped over the cross-bar.
In the 37th minute Norkus drew a free-kick twenty yards out. Midfielder Kevin Jackson lashed a shot into the wall and the rebound popped out to Evans. Evans hit it first-time but his effort sliced away to the left of the target.
The deciding goal was scored in the 56th minute. Syracuse swept a corner to the back of the box. The ball was volleyed back across the goal by defender Jason Perry to Rene Rivas who powered a header past Doyle into the center of the goal.
The Battery pushed for an equalizer and came closest in the 83rd minute. Substitute midfielder Chris Goos played a free-kick into the box. The ball ricocheted off a Syracuse head and into the path of Steve Klein. Klein made good contact with the ball but his header flashed wide of the goal.
The Battery's next home match is an International Exhibition versus Sunderland AFC of the English Championship this Saturday, July 17; kick off is set for 7:30 PM.
