Toronto Lynx News Release
(TORONTO, ON) â With the 2004 season past the halfway mark, the Toronto Lynx will welcome the Richmond Kickers to Centennial Park Stadium on Wednesday, July 14th for the Annual Pizza Pizza Youth Day matinee presented by media partner City Parent/News 4 Kids at 12pm. Nearly 4,000 youth will be attending from GTA community centers, summer schools and summer camps as youth groups provide musical/dance entertainment and Direct Kicks moderates a youth soccer skills contest at half time. This match is a must win for the Lynx as they chase the Kickers for the 4th and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. The Kickers currently sit at 5-9-1 with 16 points, trailing the Kickers, who sport a 9-6-3 record, by 14 points. With three games in hand and Richmond still to make two trips to Toronto this summer, fans are likely to witness a late season charge for the playoffs.
"We are very aware of the importance of this match," says Lynx Head Coach, Duncan Wilde. "We realize that we must improve on our performance versus Charleston. Our preparation has been excellent and the boys will definitely be ready to play Wednesday."
The Lynx will be without midfielder, Adrian Serioux due to a suspension. Serioux, along with defender Tyler Hughes, is in Vancouver for a National Team training camp with new Men's National Head Coach, Frank Yallop. The Canadians will take on Millwall from the English 1st Division and Hearts from the Scottish Premier League today and Wednesday respectively. Hughes will play in the match today but is expected to return to Toronto in time for Wednesday's home match.
Richmond is back to their winning ways after missing the playoffs last season for the first time in franchise history. The team is led offensively by Matthew Delicate and Joey Worthen who both rank in the A-League's top 20 in scoring with 16 and 11 points respectively. Goalkeeper, Ronnie Pascale is also off to a fine start to the season. Having played every minute for the Kickers this season, Pascale leads A-League âkeepers in games, minutes played and saves. He also ranks in the top 3 in wins with 9 and shutouts with 6.
LYNX HOST CALGARY MUSTANGS ON SUNDAY
The Lynx will not have much time to rest following Wednesday's match as they welcome Canadian rival, the Calgary Mustangs to Centennial Park on Sunday, July 18th at 6:00pm for their only visit to Toronto this season. Although they have struggled to a 2-8-3 start to the season, the Mustangs, under new ownership, hold victories over perennial powers, the Vancouver Whitecaps and Seattle Sounders in the Western Conference. However, the road has not been kind to Calgary thus far this season as they have yet to record a point in 6 matches.
The Lynx will welcome various labour groups in their annual Union and Employee Night with special guests CAW President, Buzz Hargrove set to perform the ceremonial kickoff and Toronto Mayor, David Miller, to perform the ceremonial coin toss.
The match also counts towards the Voyageurs Cup standings, the unofficial Canadian championship presented by the Voyageurs, Canada's Soccer Fan Club. Both clubs consider the match to be of some importance as they chase the Montreal Impact for the championship. The Impact sits at 3-0-2 with 11 points, followed by the Edmonton Aviators (1-0-2) with 5 points. The Lynx (0-2-1) can move into a third place tie with the Mustangs (1-1-1) at 4 points with a victory. The Vancouver Whitecaps round out the field with a 1-3-0 record and 3 points.
