Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC News Release

Colorado Springs, Colo. - The Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC held on to beat the Arizona United SC 3-2, despite finishing the match with only 9 men on the field.

"The guys responded from last week with a good intense start," said Switchbacks FC Head Coach Steve Trittschuh. "To pull out a win, even being down 2 men, shows the grit and determination they have."

The Switchbacks FC (3-3-0) came out quickly, with Aaron King (#18) scoring the first goal in the 4th minute.

There was a scary moment in the 31st minute when a penalty was called in the box against Switchbacks FC goalie Devala Gorrick (#1). Gorrick made a huge save, blocking the penalty kick by Arizona United SC (3-3-0)! The Switchbacks FC responded by taking the ball back down the field and within a minute, a penalty was called on Arizona United SC just on the edge of the box. Switchbacks FC's Luke Vercollone (#4) sunk the penalty shot in the right back corner making it a 2-0 match.

In the 44th minute, the ball bounded around in front of Arizona United SC's net and Switchbacks FC's Mike Seth (#12) put the ball in the net. That ended the half with the Switchbacks up 3-0.

The second half was not as great for the Switchbacks FC. In the 50th minute, Arizona United SC's Jonathan Top (#9) got the best of the Switchbacks FC defense and found the back of the net.

Then in the 51st minute, Switchbacks FC's Shintaro Harada (#21) was given a 2nd yellow card, which automatically becomes a red card and he had to leave the match. Just 20 minutes later, in the 71st minute, the same thing happened to Switchbacks FC's Josh Phillips (#2) leaving the Switchbacks FC with only 9 men on the field.

The Switchbacks FC kept the fight up, losing one more goal to Arizona United SC's Jose Cuevas (#10) in the 93rd minute.

Finally, the whistle blew and the Switchbacks FC ended the match on top 3-2.

"It was a hard-fought battle against a very good team," said Switchbacks FC goal keeper Devala Gorrick. "It was a great team effort, and I was happy to make the saves I made."

Tonight's match ties the two teams in the USL Western Conference standings, with 3 wins and 3 losses.
