Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
The Swing of the Quad Cities held four separate leads on Thursday night at O'Brien Field, but the bullpen came on late to put an end to the seesaw affair and cement an 8-5 win over the Peoria Chiefs.
Quad Cities (10-9, 48-40) took the lead for good in the top of the seventh, plating a pair of runs before adding some insurance in the ninth. Peoria (12-8, 43-46) had an answer for everything early, tying the game in the second and fifth innings before taking a brief lead in the sixth.
Trailing 5-4 heading into the seventh, the Swing finally took a lead for good. After Daryl Jones drew a leadoff walk, Jose Ramirez showed bunt on the first two pitches he saw, but took a full hack at a 2-0 pitch and drove home the runner with a groundball double inside the third base line. Later in the frame there were two on and two outs when Jaime Landin stepped to the dish, delivering a single to center that plated Ramirez for the 6-5 advantage.
The bullpen took over from there, as Marco Gonzalez (1-0), Kyle Mura, and Kenny Maiques (20) tossed the final 3.1 innings to preserve the victory. The Quad Cities offense added two more runs in the ninth, helping Gonzalez to his first decision with the Swing and Maiques to his 20th career save.
The Swing took an early lead in the top of the first with a two-out, bases-empty rally. Steven Hill got it started by roping a single to left and moved to second when Christian Reyes drew a walk. Jared Schweitzer followed with a single up the middle that scored Hill for the 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the second, Peoria evened the score. After Russ Canzler singled to open the frame, Blake Lalli blooped a double to right-center that got past Jose Ramirez, allowing Canzler to score all the way from first to tie the game at one.
Each team added a single run in the fifth inning, as Jose Ramirez hit a sacrifice fly to give the Swing a brief lead in the top half of the frame before Matt Camp's RBI-singled knotted up the score at two runs apiece in the bottom half.
In the top of the sixth, Quad Cities rallied for their third lead of the game. Christian Lopez drew a two-out walk with the bases loaded that forced in a run. One batter later Wilmer Alvarado singled to left to drive home Schweitzer for a 4-2 lead, but Jaime Landin was gunned down at the plate trying to score from second to end the inning.
Once again the Chiefs had an immediate response, mounting a three-run rally with two outs in the bottom of the sixth. Lalli's single drove home the first run and a double by Derek Schermerhorn moved men to second and third. Wellington Castillo then chased starter Tyler Herron from the contest with a two-run single, turning a 4-3 deficit into a 5-4 lead with one swing of the bat.
