SwampDogs Win Second Straight, 12-4 over Sharks

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The SwampDogs scored six in the bottom of the first inning, and though that's all they would need, they didn't ease on the throttle, defeating the Wilmington Sharks 12-4 Wednesday night at J.P. Riddle Stadium.
The Dogs got to Sharks starting pitcher John Parke early and often, as he struggled with his control. Parke walked both David Palenzuela (Miami Dade) and Kam Stewart (Frostburg State) with the bases loaded to bring in the first two runs for the Dogs, and singles from Brandon Metoyer (Menlo) and Jacob Whiting (Montevallo) sandwiched around a Palmer Page (Utah Valley) sacrifice fly would plate the remaining six runs.
The SwampDogs would add three more runs off of Parke in the fourth inning, once again fueled by his control problems. Parke walked two in the inning and uncorked two wild pitches, before being yanked with two outs in favor of Pat Toohers.
Toohers surrendered a run in the fifth and two in the sixth before settling down. He went the final 4.1 innings for the Sharks, allowing four hits and the three runs, while hitting two batters and throwing two wild pitches of his own.
Despite pounding out 12 hits, only two SwampDogs had multi-hit games - Lane Paul (Murray State, 2-4) and Palenzuela (2-3) accomplished the feat. Palenzuela, Stewart, and Page would all have two RBIs.
On the other side, Hunter Barnett (Mount Olive), in his first start of the year gave the Dogs three solid innings of work, allowing three hits and just one run. Jordy Farthing (Mount Olive) relieved him and went four innings, allowing three runs (two earned) and five hits striking out six. Ricky Rivera (Central Missouri) came in to pitch the final two innings, striking out two and allowing just one hit.
Farthing (2-3) got the win for the SwampDogs, while Parke (1-2) took the loss for Wilmington. The SwampDogs will be right back at it Thursday night at The Swamp, as they take on the Petersburg Generals at 7:05 pm. The Dogs will wear pink jerseys which will be auctioned off for the benefit of the Cape Fear Valley Health Foundation's Friends of the Cancer Center.
