SwampDogs Set to Host Sandhills Senior High School Showcase

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - For the fourth consecutive year, the Fayetteville SwampDogs will be hosting the Sandhills Senior High School Showcase presented by Lumbee River EMC and South River EMC, featuring the top high school seniors from throughout Fayetteville and the surrounding areas. The game will he held on Sunday, June 12 at J.P. Riddle Stadium.

The teams will be split into players from Cumberland County, who will play on the Lumbee River EMC team, and players from outside Cumberland County, who will play on the South River EMC squad. The players were nominated by area coaches and athletic directors, and then voted upon by members of the local media.

As part of the day's festivities, a pregame luncheon will be held for all of the student-athletes at Paradise Acres. The gathering will include guest speaker Tom Austin, the head baseball coach at Methodist University.

"It's a great honor to be asked to coach this team," said Chad Hill, head coach at Union Pines High School at coach of the South River EMC team. "Having the opportunity to coach these guys one last time in their high school career will be something that I look forward to doing on June 12th."

At the conclusion of the game, a Most Outstanding Player will be selected. That senior will receive the $1,000 Grainger Barrett Memorial Scholarship, which will go towards that player's first year of college tuition. The award is courtesy of the SwampDogs and the game's sponsors, Lumbee River EMC and South River EMC.

"What an honor and privilege it is to get a chance to participate in such a great event for kids," said Scott Ellis, head coach at South View High School and the coach of the Lumbee River EMC team. "I think it's a wonderful opportunity for these seniors, not only to play one more game, but also the chance to win a $1000 scholarship. The Fayetteville SwampDogs are truly a class organization to put on an event like this for our players."
