Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release
WILMININGTON, N.C. - The Fayetteville SwampDogs took another leap closer to the Petitt Cup Playoffs as they dispatched the rival Wilmington Sharks 9-0 Saturday night in Wilmington.
The SwampDogs got off to a fast start, scoring a run in the first inning off of Sharks starter Tyler Haswell after back to back throwing errors, one on second baseman Tyler Best and the other on shortstop Joe DeVito allowed Norm Donkin (Delaware) to cross the plate with the game's first run.
The Dogs would pack on three more runs in the second inning, starting when Lane Paul (Murray State College) would walk with one out. He would advance to second on a wild pitch, then to third when Brandon Metoyer (Menlo) singled. Metoyer would steal a base, and two batters later, Jason Blum (Southeast Missouri State) singled into right field, scoring Paul and Metoyer. A Michael Bozarth (Saint Louis) double would plate Blum.
The game chugged along at 4-0 SwampDogs until the top of the sixth, when they would break the game open against reliever Joe O'Donnell. Chase Edwards (Mount Olive) would single to lead off the inning, then Kam Stewart (Frostburg State) sacrificed him to second. Paul was hit by a pitch, then Metoyer singled to left, scoring Edwards. A wild pitch advanced the baserunners 90 feet each, then David LaFleur (LSU Eunice) walked to load the bases. Blum would get hit by a pitch to force in Paul, then Bozarth would double to score Metoyer and LaFleur. Blum would score the inning's fifth run when Donkin would ground out.
Kodi Whitley (Mount Olive, 1-0) got the win for the SwampDogs, allowing no runs on two hits striking out four and walking two in his five innings of work. Haswell (3-4) took the loss for the Sharks, lasting just four innings while allowing four runs (two earned) on three hits, striking out three and walking two.
Teddy Turner (Trinity) would earn a rare four-inning save as he shut down the door and sealed the win for the SwampDogs. It was Turner's first save of the year.
The Dogs are right back in action Sunday evening as they take on the Wilson Tobs at 5:05 pm.
