Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release
WILSON, N.C. - It was an old-fashioned Sunday pitcher's duel at Historic Fleming Stadium, as the SwampDogs fell to the Wilson Tobs 4-2 in a hard-fought contest.
The SwampDogs broke the scoreless tie in the top half of the first inning, when Tobs starter Quinn Atwood walked leadoff hitter Jason Blum (Southeast Missouri State) on four pitches to open the game. With Michael Bozarth (Saint Louis) at the plate, Blum stole second, then advanced to third on a Norm Donkin (Delaware) groundout to the right side of the infield. Sam Hall (Dixie State) would drive in Blum with a single to make it 1-0.
The Tobs would draw even in the bottom of the third inning, when Matt Rubino would touch up SwampDogs starter Bennett Schiltz (Midland) for a solo homerun to lead off the inning.
The Dogs would break the 1-1 tie in the top half of the eighth inning when David LaFleur (LSU Eunice) would crack a home run - his third of the season - off of reliever Daniel Batts to give the Dogs a one run advantage. The three home runs tie LaFleur with Donkin for the team lead.
In the bottom half of the eighth, the Tobs would threaten, getting Collins Cuthrell on base on a throwing error to lead off the inning, who was then sacrificed to second by Adam Pate. Doug Teegarden lined out to second base for the second out, then after Schiltz walked Seth LaRue, he was yanked in favor of Hunter Barnett (Mount Olive). Barnett allowed a single to Ben Schmucker to drive in Cuthrell. A passed ball by Hall allowed LaRue to dance home with the go ahead run, and sending Schmucker to third.
Barnett would walk Matthew Parrish to put runners on the corners, then surrendered a double to Drew Cole to bring home Schmucker and make it 4-2 Tobs.
The Tobs brought in Chris Williams to try to save the game in the ninth inning, and he would shut the Dogs down 1-2-3.
Schiltz (3-4) was the undeserving loser for the SwampDogs, Batts (6-0) got the win for the Tobs. The SwampDogs return home to resume the playoff chase Monday night to face the rival Wilmington Sharks at 7:05 pm. For tickets and more information, call the SwampDogs offices at 426-5900.
