SwampDogs Outta this World against the Stars
June 12, 2018 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release
It takes more than a little early rain to keep the SwampDogs in the dog house.
Just a day after the elements forced the team to postpone that night's game, Tuesday's weather seemed like more of the same. The morning's rain subsided by the early afternoon, though, and the SwampDogs took full advantage of the chance to play, notching a 6-2 victory in an exhibition against the Catawba Valley Stars.
The SwampDogs came roaring out of the gates Tuesday, scoring two runs in the first on a combination of singles, walks, a hit batsman and a wild pitch.
The Stars' pitching staff got locked in after the rough start, though, allowing just one hit over the next four innings while Catawba Valley pushed two runs across to tie the game in the fourth.
The most interesting play of the game came in the top of the sixth, when SwampDogs' reliever Taylor Gibson (Northwest Florida State) struck out Beau Peltier with two outs and the bases loaded. The umpires initially called a dropped third strike, but as catcher Harry Brown (James Madison) tried to pick the ball up, it was kicked by the home plate umpire, who promptly ruled the play dead.
While the original call on the field awarded Peltier first base and put the Stars ahead 3-2, the umpires changed their decision after a discussion with Fayetteville head coach Matt Hollod, nullifying the run and ending the inning.
The SwampDogs then responded with three runs in the sixth thanks to a Tanner Piechnick (Ohio) triple, Brett Young (Delta State) double, Willis McDaniel (Florida A&M) walk, and Matthias Carter (Methodist) single. Instead of trailing, Fayetteville led 5-2 heading into the seventh.
The SwampDogs would not look back, adding a run in the eighth to complete the thorough 6-2 victory.
The SwampDogs get back into Coastal Plain League play on the road in Wilmington on Wednesday before returning home to celebrate the army's birthday on Thursday.
