Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Fayetteville SwampDogs split a doubleheader against the Florence RedWolves Monday night, losing 6-2 in game one, but winning 7-4 in game two as they secured their spot in the Petitt Cup Playoffs.
The SwampDogs bats struggled in game one, and a six-run outburst by the RedWolves in the third inning were enough to sink the Dogs, despite four quality innings of relief from Clayton Freimuth (Trinity), who finished the game by retiring the final 12 batters he faced. Norm Donkin (Delaware was the lone bright spot offensively, going 2-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored.
Cam Knott (Mercyhurst) was the loser and fell to 4-3 on the season, while James Phillips got the win for Florence and moved ot 3-2.
Game two appeared to be a similar story early, as the SwampDogs fell behind 4-0 as the RedWolves bats attacked Garrett Hickman (UNC Pembroke). But the SwampDogs' bats finally came alive in the bottom of the third, when they plated five runs on five hits against Florence starter Fernando Pinillos, including a triple from Donkin.
Infielder Brandon Metoyer (Menlo) came in to relieve Hickman in the fourth, and ended up throwing four shutout innings, allowing just two hits and striking out five batters in the process.
Metoyer (1-0) would earn the win for the Dogs, while Pinillos (0-1) got the loss for the RedWolves.
With their terrific play late in the season, the SwampDogs have locked up the fourth seed in the Petitt Cup Playoffs and will take on the number one seeded Peninsula Pilots on Wednesday at J.P. Riddle Stadium for Game One. For tickets and more information, call the SwampDogs offices at 426-5900.
