WILSON, N.C. - Baseball is a game that can turn around in a matter of seconds, and the SwampDogs learned that the hard way Wednesday night.
After breaking a 1-1 tie in the top of the ninth inning in Wilson, Fayetteville was unable to hold off the Tobs in the bottom half, allowing two runs and shouldering a 3-2 loss on Independence Day.
Despite the final score, the SwampDogs proved once again they have the grit needed to fight late in close games. With Fayetteville recording just five hits through the first eight innings, Matt Kelly (Portland) started off the final frame by slapping a leadoff double down the left field line. He promptly came around to score when Joey Wiemer's (Cincinnati) chopper forced an errant throw by the Tobs' catcher. The SwampDogs' earlier run had come on back-to-back hits by Logan Jarvis (Belmont) and Jay Hayes (Florida Gulf Coast) in the fifth.
Fayetteville also continued to show encouraging signs on the mound against the Tobs, with Wednesday marking the third straight game in which Fayetteville allowed no more than three runs. Tyler Shuck (Florida Gulf Coast) made his first start of the season as a pitcher and looked sharp for four innings, yielding just one run on two hits.
The SwampDogs continue their stretch of six games in as many days Thursday against the Wilmington Sharks. It's Kids' Choice Night at The Swamp, but all Nickelodeon lovers are welcome for the 7:05 first pitch!
