SwampDogs Fall Despite Quality Start

July 26, 2015 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Fayetteville SwampDogs fell to the Holly Springs Salamanders 8-1 in a Sunday evening contest at J.P. Riddle Stadium.

The game was a classic pitcher's duel through the first three innings with Matt Randolph (Fr./Georgetown) of the SwampDogs and Colton Duttweiler of the Salamanders matching zeroes. Randolph was perfect through the first three frames in his first start with the team.

In the fourth inning, it was the Salamanders who broke through for four unearned runs against Randolph after Sam Cothran (Jr./Erskine) committed an error on a Brian Miller line drive to start the inning, then Joey Roach smacked a two-out grand slam to give the Salamanders a 4-0 lead.

Randolph would settle down from there, facing the minimum over his final three innings, allowing just one hit in the process.

The SwampDogs struck for a run in the bottom of the fifth inning, when Cothran singled with one out against Duttweiler, then Carson Waln (Soph./Wofford) doubled to send Cothran to third. Ki-Jana Madden was up next and laced a single into left field to score Cothran with the only run of the game for the SwampDogs.

The Salamanders tacked on four insurance runs in the eighth inning against Ryan Stamler (Fr./The Citadel) before Zach McKay (Soph./The Citadel) came on to finish the contest out.

Randolph got hung with the hard-luck loss to fall to 0-1 on the season, while Duttwieler got the win for the Salamanders, improving to 3-1.

The SwampDogs (17-30) hit the road on Monday and Tuesday for a Virginia double-dip, taking on the Peninsula Pilots on Monday night, before a Tuesday matinee in Petersburg. They return home on Wednesday to take on the Morehead City Marlins on Bringing Memories Home Safe presented by the Fayetteville Walk to End Alzheimer's.
