Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The SwampDogs have made a specialty out of come from behind wins this season, but Saturday night against the Columbia Blowfish, it wasn't in the cards as they fell 4-3.
Things got off to a rough start for starting pitcher Jordy Farthing, who struggled to find his command in the first few innings, but was able to work his way out of trouble.
Offensively things weren't much better. Blowfish starter Trevor Hutto retired the first seven SwampDog batters to face him.
The game was scoreless into the bottom of the third, when designated hitter Brandon Metoyer got things going with a one out single. He then stole second, and after a walk to catcher Jacob Whiting and second baseman Jason Blum getting hit by a pitch, the bases were loaded. Shortstop Kam Stewart got Metoyer in with a sacrifice fly to centerfield, and the Dogs were out to a 1-0 lead.
Hutto would settle in from there and not allow any more runs in his seven innings of work.
Farthing surrendered a run in the fourth to tie the game at one, and gave up another two in the fifth after a controversial tag play at home plate. First baseman Robbie Streett laced a single to left field with third baseman Allen Staton on second. Left fielder Norm Donkin unleashed a strike to Whiting which beat Staton to the plate. Staton, however, was able to make a fantastic slide to evade Whiting's tag.
Seth Laigast, pitching for the second time in as many nights, surrendered a run in the seventh to make it 4-1 Blowfish.
The bottom of the eighth inning to off to a good start for the SwampDogs as third baseman Palmer Page walked, and Metoyer singled. Whiting then laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt that hugged the foul line, and Columbia catcher JD Crowe had to put it in his back pocket.
The bases were loaded with nobody out for Blum, who hit into a fielder's choice that allowed a run to score. Stewart then drove in Metoyer with a single to make it 4-3. Evan Raynor would get out of the inning, then struck out the side in the ninth inning to save the win for the Blowfish.
The winning pitcher was Hutto, who improves to 1-0 on the season. Farthing took the loss for the Dogs, falling to 0-1. Raynor's save was his second of the year.
The SwampDogs are back at it Monday night against the Catawba Valley Stars, first pitch at 7:05 pm. For tickets and more information, call 910-426-5900.
