Sussex Wins Series Finale
June 2, 2010 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Sussex Skyhawks News Release
The Sussex Skyhawks (4-3) finished their seven-game homestand at CenturyLink Field at Skylands Park with a 7-5 win over the Brockton Rox (3-3) on Wednesday morning. RHP Jusef Frias bounced back from a rough outing last Friday against the New Jersey Jackals to pitch six strong innings, allowing just two earned runs while striking out eight en route to his first win of the season. He now ranks second in the Can-Am League with 12 strikeouts on the year. The Skyhawks touched RHP Wayne Lundgren for seven runs over his four innings of work, tallying nine hits and two walks against the third-year Rox starter.
The Brockton bullpen was perfect over the last four innings. RHP Buster Lussier pitched three innings and LHP Dustin Birosak pitched one. Both struck out two batters apiece.
The Sussex 'pen was impressive as well. RHP Justin Dignelli pitched 1.1 innings, surrendering one earned run on one hit and two walks. LHP Jared Locke threw a perfect two thirds of an inning in the eighth before RHP Duaner Sanchez came on in the ninth to retire the side in order and earn his third save of the year.
Offensively, the 2-3-4 hitters in the Sussex lineup did most of the damage. 2B Chase Fontaine, CF Carl Loadenthal and DH Caleb Stewart were each 2 for 4. The three hitters combined to drive in six of the team's seven runs (2 RBI for Fontaine, 1 RBI for Loadenthal and 3 RBI for Stewart). Fontaine and Stewart both rank in the top four among league leaders in batting average as of the end of today's game, and Fontaine and Loadenthal are tied for the league lead with eight RBI each.
The Skyhawks hit the road for the first time this season when they travel to Worcester to take on the Tornadoes tomorrow night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. and RHP Mike McGuire is Sussex's probable starter. The Skyhawks will return home on Monday to take on the Brockton Rox once again at CenturyLink Field at Skylands Park.
