Wichita Wind Surge News Release
Wichita, KS - The Wind Surge snap winning streak, lose their first game in five days after a 5-2 defeat versus the Arkansas Travelers on Wednesday night at Riverfront Stadium.
Wichita starter Austin Schulfer allowed a pair of Arkansas runs to score in the first inning, and the Surge were unable to convert in scoring situations early. Schulfer would finish the night with four innings pitched, three earned runs, three walks, and strike out six. He would pick up his third loss, bringing his record to 1-3 on the year.
In the bottom of the fifth, BJ Boyd tripled, followed by a double from Jermaine Palacios which cut into the Travelers lead. Ernie de la Trinidad would follow Palacios with a single, cutting the deficit once more. Wichita trailed 4-2 after the fifth inning.
The Wind Surge bullpen continued their dominance tonight. Calvin Faucher would come out of the bullpen in relief, tossing two and a third scoreless innings, with one walk and three strikeouts. Yennier Cano followed up, going an inning and two thirds, with no runs, one hit, no walks, and three strikeouts.
The Wind Surge committed four defensive errors tonight, a season high. They would also tie a season high with two of the Travelers runs being unearned.
NOTES: C Nick Garland was promoted to Wichita from Low-A Fort Myers. OF Mark Contreras and C David Banuelos were promoted to Triple-A St. Paul. Former Wind Surge OF Gilberto Celestino made his debut with the Minnesota Twins tonight, becoming the first former Surge player to reach the major league level. Jermaine Palacios extended his hitting streak to six games tonight. Jose Miranda extended his hitting streak to five games. The Surge game on July 14th against Tulsa has been moved from 7:05pm start to 12:05pm.
COMING UP: Wichita will host the Arkansas Travelers, Double-A affiliate of the Seattle Mariners, in the third game of the series Thursday night, with the first pitch at 7:05pm.
