HUNTSVILLE, AL -- The Mississippi Surge extended their unbeaten streak to nine games and took control of first place in the Southern Professional Hockey League with a 4-2 victory over the Huntsville Havoc at the Von Braun Center on Friday night.

Dominating play in the first period, Tom Boudreau gave the Surge a 1-0 lead at the 7:49 mark of the first, when Chris Ferazzoli connected a backhand centering feed that Boudreau buried behind Huntsville goalie Dan McWhinney. Jack Wolgemuth blasted the rebound of Tim Velemirovich's shot over McWhinney's glove for a power-play goal at 14:01 to give the Surge a 2-0 lead.

Huntsville battled back to even the score at two-apiece in the second period, getting goals from Jordan Foote at 5:07 and Mike Carter at 8:58. The Havoc appeared to gain momentum when the Havoc's Bill McCreary goaded Mississippi's Mike Richard to fight, and when Richard dropped his gloves, McCreary cowered behind the linesmen. Richard was assessed three minors on the play against McCreary's one, which gave Huntsville a four-minute power play.

Just 15 seconds into the power play, Mississippi's Matthew Larke took an outlet pass up the right wing and beat McWhinney on the long side for a shorthand goal and a 3-2 Surge lead at 19:43 of the second. With the power play carrying over to the third period, Huntsville's Mike Carter took a roughing minor just 18 seconds in, knocking two minutes off the power play.

Despite several chances in the third period, Huntsville failed to capitalize, and Steve Weidlich sealed the Surge victory with a 190-foot empty-net goal at the 19:10 mark of the third period.

Bill Zaniboni made 14 saves to earn the win, and the Surge was 1-for-6 on the power play.
