Mississippi Surge News Release
The Mississippi Surge came out on the low end of a see-saw affair, losing 4-2 to the Louisiana IceGators Monday night in Lafayette, La. The loss is the fifth straight for the Surge.
Former Surge goaltender Dan Earles stymied his former team stopping 30 of the 32 shots he faced. Earles has now won his last five decisions, with two of those coming against the Surge. Louisiana took a 2-0 lead on first period goals by Jason Hill and August Aiken. Earles upheld his end of the bargain stonewalling the Surge which outshot the IceGators 15-8 in the first period.
Mississippi tipped the see-saw back in its favor, breaking through in the second period as two defensemen each scored a power play goal. James Isaacs finally got the puck past Earles at 1:20 of the second period. Later with Louisiana's Tyler Lyon off for hooking, Matt Ridley's shot from just inside the blueline found its way into the upper part of the net to tie the score. The goal also continued the Surge's mark of scoring at least two goals in each of its 20 games. The Surge is the only team in the Southern Professional Hockey League to have scored at least twice in each game its played.
Before the second period ended however, Sean Murray put Louisiana back in the lead, 5:49 after Ridley had tied it. Jordan Oye's thrid period goal gave the IceGators any insurance they would need as Earles blanked the Surge the rest of the way. Mississippi outshot Louisiana 32-23 on the game.
The Surge plays its final home game of 2011 Tuesday night, hosting league leading Augusta at 7:05 at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum.
