Surge Captures SPHL Regular Season Title

COLUMBUS, GA -- The Mississippi Surge clinched the William B. Coffey Trophy as the Southern Professional Hockey League's Regular Season Champions with a 5-2 victory over the Columbus Cottonmouths on Thursday evening.

Mississippi jumped out to an early lead when Chris Greene beat Columbus goalie Ian Vigier with a shot from the left wing for a power-play goal at 2:41 of the first period.

The Surge grabbed a 2-0 lead at 3:40 of the second when Mike Richard tapped home a centering feed from Matthew Larke. Columbus jumped back into the game with a shorthand goal from Ryan McCarthy at 6:29, and tied the game when Craig Stahl scoed on a wrist shot at 8:45 of the second. Mississippi regained control when Larke tapped Greene's centering pass Vigier at 11:32, and then Tim Velemirovich wristed a shot off of Vigier's glove and into the net for a 4-2 Mississippi lead at 19:04 of the second.

Matthew Larke gave the Surge a three-goal lead when he tapped a loose puck through the legs of Vigier at 7:18of the third.

Dan Earles made 29 saves in the Surge net to earn a victory in his first start for Mississippi, and the Surge power play was 1-for-7.

The Surge are back home tomorrow and Saturday night against the Louisiana Ice Gators! All tickets for those two games are just $5, and can be purchased by calling (228) 287-PUCK.
