San Diego Surf Dawgs News Release
Extra innings once again brought good fortune to the Surf Dawgs as they defeated the Long Beach Armada 3-2 in 11 innings. With the victory, San Diego improves to 5-0 in extra-inning games. The game ended on an awkward play with two outs and Jeremy McCann at the plate. Johnny Day was hung out between first and second and while Day was caught in the run down, Matt Maloney, who was on third base, scored to win the game. E.J. Shanks (6-1) picked up his sixth win of the season in relief.
Jose Canseco went 1-for-4 tonight and was hit by a Yoankis Turino pitch in the fifth inning. Tonight was the first night the two had faced each other after being traded for one another in mid July.
San Diego would trail for most of the game but made their comeback late in the game. Long Beach got on the board in the third inning off of Turino, who went five innings allowing the one run on five hits with three strikeouts in his first start of the season. Ryan Stevenson, who was 2-for-5, singled to start the inning and moved to second on the Randall Shelley ground out. Jeff LaRue, who had four RBI in the series coming into tonight's game, got one more by singling in Stevenson from second to make it 1-0 Armada.
The 1-0 lead seemed like it would be enough for Armada starting pitcher Rik Currier. Currier would end up throwing 7 2/3 innings allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits with a season-high seven strikeouts.
The Surf Dawgs would breakout against Currier in the seventh and it began with Ryan Fox. Fox led off with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Maloney. Kevin Ciarrachi came up clutch and singled to right to drive in Fox to tie it at one.
In the eighth, the Surf Dawgs got a rally going with two outs. Tony Garcia walked for the second time and he moved to second on a past ball. Last week's Player of the Week Adam Mandel came up big with a single to right center to drive in Garcia and San Diego had the lead going into the ninth.
Shanks, who had entered the game in the top of the eighth, would stay in to try and close it out in the ninth. The Armada had other plans as Chris Klemm doubled with one out to put himself in scoring position. Bobby Castro drove in Klemm on a single to center to tie the game at two. Shanks would get out of the inning but this game would need more than just nine innings to be completed.
An opportunity to win the game presented itself to the Surf Dawgs in the bottom of the tenth. Once again with two outs, Garcia and Mandel both singled and would wind up at second and third respectively for Joey Huskins. Huskins struck out swinging to send it to the eleventh.
Shanks would pitch out of jam in the top half - runners at the corners with only one out - to enable the Dawgs to win it in the bottom half.
San Diego (7-6) pulls back above .500 in the second half and will look to continue their success against the Reno Silver Sox tomorrow. The Silver Sox (6-7) make their first visit to San Diego for a three-game set which starts tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. PT.
