Super Six: Blaze Thwomp Storm, 11-1
August 12, 2015 - California League (CalL1)
Bakersfield Blaze News Release
The surging Bakersfield Blaze kept the era of good feelings going with a cruising, runaway 11-1 win over the Lake Elsinore Storm on Tuesday night in the first game of a high-distance six-game road trip.
The game was over pretty quickly, giving the Blaze a much-needed easy win after a tight series with Modesto last weekend.
Brett Ash (W, 5-8) got the start, and looking to bounce back off a handful of tougher outings, Ash dealt for 6.0 shutout innings, allowing a total of just three singles to the Lake Elsinore offense, striking out five without issuing a walk.
Meanwhile, the Blaze offense once again went to work, balancing a new, more patient attack with key hits and multi-run innings.
A two-run 1st started the fun, as Tyler O'Neill doubled home Nelson Ward (who reached base five times in the game), and Austin Wilson followed with a run-scoring grounder.
One inning later, the Blaze added a single tally on a Ward triple to plate Aaron Barbosa, and in the 3rd, Kyle Petty stroked a slicing liner around Lake Elsinore's tall fence in rightfield for a solo homer and a 4-0 lead.
The 4th provided no relief for Storm starter Travis Radke (L, 0-1), when Tim Lopes singled home two more. A 6-0 lead felt pretty safe, but 11-0 was safer.
In the 6th, the Storm pitching staff put together one of the wildest innings of the season, as Bakersfield scored five runs in the frame on just one hit, with Lake Elsinore pitching issuing four walks and hitting three Blaze batters. Petty's three-run double punctuated the weird, prolonged frame to put the game away.
Carlos Misell worked two innings and Will Mathis pitched the 9th to wrap up the win.
The victory is the sixth in a row for a Blaze team that has now set a new season-high for win streaks and has taken nine of the last ten contests overall.
The club will look to extend the run in another 6:00pm start on the road on Wednesday night, with Scott DeCecco taking the hill. Fans are encouraged to listen to Dan Besbris with the call at BakersfieldBlaze.com and TuneIn Radio.
