July 20, 2013 - Futures Collegiate Baseball League (FCBL)
Pittsfield Suns News Release

The Pittsfield Suns (16-18) and their fans could get used to this. The Suns walked off for the second time in four games and have now won three of four to climb their way back in to a playoff position. The Suns played the Torrington Titans in atight, well-pitched ball game that came down to the final out. Derek Gardella came through in the clutch with a booming double that brought home Brenden Geary to win the game for the Suns, 3-2.

Christian Lavoie provided the Suns with a solid pitching performace, going 5.2 innings, allowing five hits, two runs, and striking out three. Lavoie loaded the bases with no outs in the fifth inning but was able to escape the jam by only allowing two runs. Brenden Geary got one of those runs back in the bottom of the inning with his first home run of the season.

Now down 2-1 the Suns brought in sidearmer Tom Hackimer in to get the final out of the inning thanks to a caught stealing by Brendan Slattery. Frank Crinella got the bottom of the sixth started with his first double of the game and then came around to tie the game on a Steve Dill sacrifice fly.

Tom Hackimer then continud to dominate the Titans through the top of the ninth inning. Hackimer finished with a line of 3.1 innings, allowing just one hit and striking out five Titans. Hackimer lowered his ERA to 2.25 on the season and has really become a solid option for Tom Conley out of the pen.

In the bottom of the ninth the Suns were making it looklike the game was heading to extras by giving the Titans two quick outs on just five pitches but a two-out walk spelled doom for the Titans. Derek Gardella came in to pinch hit and did not disappoint. After working the count full, Gardella crushed a double to the left center field gap that allowed Brenden Geary to score all the way from first.

The 3-2 win moved the Suns to 16-18 and into 5th place in the FCBL. The Suns next play tomorrow night against the Martha's Vineyard Shark. Next home game for the Suns is Sunday, July 19th agains the Wachusett Dirt Dawgs at Wahconah Park.
