Suns Player Drafted

The Pittsfield Suns (Futures Collegiate Baseball League) had their firstplayer draftedin the Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft when shortstop Andrew Velazquez was selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 7th round (243rd overall).

The 5'-9", 160 lb switch-hitter, starred at Fordham Prep School this past year and has committed to Virginia Tech. Velazquez is the first Futures Collegiate Baseball League player chosen in the 2012 MLB draft.

"The days of the draft are very nerve racking" said Suns manager Jamie Keefe. "You never know if your name is going to get called but weare happy to have one of our guys drafted. Whether Andrew signs or comes to Pittsfield, we support him all the way."

The Pittsfield Suns open their inaugural season at Wahconah Park on Thursday, June 7th. Gates will open at 5PM with local favorite Whiskey City performing from 5:15-6:45PM (presented by Halpin's Grub & Grog). The first 2,000 fans through the gates will receive a free Suns magnet schedule and after the game, the skies will alight with a great fireworks show. At the conclusion of the fireworks show, all fans are invited onto the field to meet the players and coaches, get autographs, and run the bases.
