Suns Can't Hold off Sharks, Lose 8-2

PITTSFIELD, MA (July 30, 2015) - 15 hits and dominant starting pitching led the Martha's Vineyard Sharks to an 8-2 victory over the Suns at Wahconah Park Thursday night.

The Sharks opened up the scoring in the top of the first inning. Ryan Kelly reached on a lead off walk and advance to second on a one-out single by Jon Mayer. Bobby San Martin capitalized and hit RBI single, allowing Kelly to score from second to give Martha's Vineyard the early 1-0 lead.

The visitors piled on three more runs in the second inning. Shortstop Ricky Surum smacked a one-out single and advanced to third on a hit by designated hitter, Jack Roberts. Mayer followed with an RBI double, allowing a run to score. Left fielder Brian Campbell then followed with a single to plate Roberts and Mayer making it a 4-0 ballgame.

The Suns put up their first run in the bottom of the second inning. Catcher Dan Palazzo led off the inning with a walk. Palazzo reached second on a wild pitch, and eventually scored on Brendan Geary's base hit to right field. The Suns' first baseman was able to reach second on an error by right fielder Kevin Brice, and the Suns cut the deficit to three runs.

No runs would score until the top of the fifth inning, when Brice ripped an RBI double, scoring Campbell from third base and making it a 5-1 Sharks lead. That ended Corey Wilson's night on the hill for the Suns, and University of Nevada product Austin Dick entered the game.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Suns right fielder Tyler Lyne crossed the plate, cutting Martha Vineyard's lead to 5-2., but the Sharks' bit back with Bobby San Martin's lead-off homerun in the top of the seventh frame, extending his teams' lead to 6-2.

The Sharks stretched their lead to 8-2 in the eighth inning on Jack Roberts' RBI double, his third hit of the night, and Campbell's sac fly to left field. Campbell led the Sharks with three RBIs Thursday night, and leads the FCBL with a .405 batting average.

Sharks starting pitcher Justin Garcia (4-1) was dominant, picking up his fourth win of the season. The right-hander struck out 10 batters and limited the Suns to just two hits over five innings. Southpaw Corey Wilson (3-3) was charged with the loss, allowing five runs on 10 hits over 4.1 innings.
