Quad City Mallards News Release
MOLINE, Ill. (February 12, 2012) - Jean-Phillip Chabot scored twice and the Arizona Sundogs produced four unanswered goals on the way to a 5-2 victory Sunday over the host Quad City Mallards- who saw forward Jason Kostadine, defenseman Bob Preece and coach and general manager David Bell all assessed game misconducts. With the loss, the fifth place Mallards drop to 26-20-1 (53 points) and remain one point behind the fourth place Rapid City Rush in the Central Hockey League's Turner Conference.
The Sundogs scored twice in a span of just over two minutes in the second period to take a 4-2 lead. Chabot backhanded the puck home from the slot to snap a 2-2 tie and give Arizona its first lead of the evening at 8:57 of the second. In the wake of Chabot's tie-breaker the Mallards were whistled for three minor penalties in quick succession, including an unsportsmanlike conduct call assessed to Bell, who was also given his game misconduct at that juncture by referee Boone Bruggman for abuse of officials. The Sundogs cashed in on that string of Quad City penalties when Olivier Proulx scored Arizona's second 5-on-3 goal of the game from the right wing circle to make it 4-2 at 11:15.
Arizona goaltender Mike Spilliane, who finished the game with 33 saves, turned a aside a series of fine Mallard chances early in the third period to set the stage for Adam Smyth to further frustrate Quad City comeback hopes with a goal from the right wing circle that extended the Sundog lead to 5-2 at 7:36 of the third.
Early on it seemed the game might take a much different course for the Mallards, who twice took the lead in the first period only for the Sundogs to twice bounce back and tie the game. Quad City jumped in front 1-0 when Jared Brown swept home John Snowden's feed from close range just one minute and 22 seconds into the game. Chabot pounced on a loose puck in the slot to even the score at one at 8:11 of the first. Eric Giosa's backhander from the slot put the Mallards back on top just over a minute later, but the Sundogs would equalize a second time while up two men when Craig McDonald fired a one timer past Mallard goaltender David Brown from the high slot at 18:40.
McDonald triggered Arizona's run of four straight goals just after Kostadine was issued his marching orders for not having his sweater tied down during a fight with Arizona's Tyler Matheson. Preece would exit the game at the end of the second period after he, like Bell, was hit with an abuse-of-officials misconduct.
