Sundogs Get Shootout Win Over the Amarillo Gorillas

PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. - The Arizona Sundogs, playing in their second contest of a five game, 11 day road trip, today went to a shootout, the first-ever in franchise history, defeating Southwest Division opponent the Amarillo Gorillas 5-4. Ryan Steeves, Brent Kelly and Chris Greene scored in the shootout, giving Arizona the victory. Torrie Wheat tallied two goals and Brent Kelly totaled three assists in the contest. Veteran Dan Laperriere notched his sixth and seventh helpers to move into second in the league in assists. With the win, the Sundogs move into first place in the Southwest Division with a record of 3-1-0.

The Sundogs came out firing in the first period, scoring two goals, one on their league-leading power play. Arizona would go on the power play after Amarillo's Trevor Read was called for hooking at 3:47 of the first. Arizona's Torrie Wheat would take advantage, putting a rebound past Amarillo's Shawn Conschafter at the 4:50 mark. Dan Laperriere and Brent Kelly were credited with assists on the play. The goal marks Wheat's second goal in as many games. Less than five minutes later, Arizona would strike again on an even-strength goal from Chris Greene, assisted by Cory Stillman and Brent Kelly. Arizona netminder Kris Mayotte stopped 11 shots in the period.

Penalties and undisciplined play would hurt the Sundogs in the second period, giving up two power play goals to the Gorillas. Amarillo's Rich Hansen would tally both power play goals, his first at 2:50 of the period on a Kyle Orr slashing call. Less than 30 seconds later, Hansen would get his second goal on a Mike Looby interference call. Torrie Wheat would notch his second goal of the night and third in two games at 13:06 of the second from Ryan Steeves and Chris Bartolone. With 25 seconds left in the middle frame, the Sundogs would see their first penalty shot in franchise history. Forward Brent Kelly would take the historic shot, sliding it wide of the goal.

At 7:54 of the third period, Arizona collected its second power play goal of the game, scored by Chris Bartolone, assisted by Dan Laperriere and Brent Kelly. At 9:31, Amarillo's Hansen would score his third goal of the game, this time short handed. Hansen was assisted by Lipsett and Detlefsen on the play. Four minutes later, Amarillo would tie the game at four on a goal by Joey Bastien from Keith Rowe and Brent Hughes.

The third period would end in a tie, sending the two teams would go to overtime. Both clubs would see scoring chances and power plays in the extra frame but with either unable to convert, the game would go to a shootout.

In the shootout, Ryan Steeves, Brent Kelly and Chris Greene scored for Arizona while Brent Hughes was the only player bale to score for Amarillo.

Kris Mayotte backstopped Arizona to the win, stopping 37 of 41 shots improving to 2-1 on the season. Arizona finished 2 for 8 on the power play while Amarillo finished 2 for 14. Arizona out shot Amarillo 43-41. The next game for the Sundogs is this Tuesday, October 31 against the Lubbock Cotton Kings.
