LAREDO, Texas- The defending CHL President's Cup Champion Laredo Bucks got a hat trick from forward Jeff Genovy as they beat the Austin Ice Bats 5-3 on Sunday night at the Chaparral Ice Center in Austin. With the win the Bucks snapped a two game losing streak and evened their record at 2-2-0, good for four points and second place in the Southeast Division. Laredo returns home on Tuesday to celebrate Halloween against the Corpus Christi Rayz. Face off set for 7 p.m. The first 2,500 fans get a Bucks Halloween Flashing Lapel Pin courtesy of AT&T. Coming off a tough loss Laredo immediately cranked things up with an early power play chance. Genovy registered his first pro goal with a wrist shot from just inside the left circle at 3:23 for a 1-0 Bucks lead. The goal broke an 0-14 stretch on the man advantage for Laredo. Austin tied the game on a goal by forward Aaron Davis who poked in the rebound of a John McNabb shot at 12:43.
Early in the second Austin took the lead. On a Bucks power play chance McNabb stripped the puck at the Laredo blue line and streaked in to score on a shorthanded breakaway at 1:35. Unfazed the Bucks came back as defenseman Philippe Seguin teed up a slap shot from the top of the left circle on the remaining time left on the power play for his first as a pro to tie the game at 2-2 at 2:03. Austin answered on a power play chance of their own as Davis got his second of the game at 3:05 to make it 3-2 Ice Bats. Once again the Bucks responded as Genovy took a pass, skated down the right goal line, froze the goalie and then circled and wrapped the puck into the net on his backhand at 6:06 for his second of the game.
The Bucks took the lead early in the third. Defenseman Paul Elliott led the rush and found forward Kris MacPhee for a one-timer from the right circle at 1:38. It was the second of the season for MacPhee. Late in the game the Bucks iced it when Genovy scored into the empty net to finish off the hat trick at 19:06. FINAL SCORE Laredo 5, Austin 3.
Eric Marvin stopped 22 of 25 shots to get the win and improve to 1-0-0. Miguel Beaudry allowed four goals on 29 shots and fell to 1-1-1. The Bucks were 2-9 on the power play while Austin was 1-6. Laredo out shot the Ice Bats 30-25.
