Boise, Idaho (September 17, 2002)â With the first pick of the 17th Annual Continental Basketball College Draft, the Yakima Sun Kings selected Shooting Guard Elvin Mims (6-5, 203) from the University of Southern Mississippi.
"Elvin separated himself from a talented group of players at the NBA Chicago Pre-draft this summer," said Yakima Head Coach Paul Woolpert, who takes over the Sun Kings this season after leading them to a CBA Championship in 2000 and taking the Sioux Falls Skyforce to the American Conference finals in 2002. "He's shown that he can defend multiple positions. He is a long, athletic player who fits the style of basketball the Sun Kings will bring to the Yakima fans this season.
"These skills, and the fact that Elvin and his agent, Tommy Smith, are committed to playing in the Continental Basketball Association this year are all reasons why we made this pick."
In his senior season, the Century, Fla. native led the Golden Eagles with 18.9 ppg and 7.8 rpg, garnering Third Team All-Conference USA honors. As a junior, Mims averaged 10.0 ppg, and in two seasons at Okaloosa-Walton CC (Florida) he posted 15.4 ppg and 8.9 rpg.
"It is an honor to be selected as the top pick of a basketball league with the credibility and history of the CBA," said Mims, who made a team high 41 three-point field goals for the Golden Eagles in 2001-02. "To play for a professional basketball coach as highly respected as Paul Woolpert is an honor. I can't wait to report to training camp on October 31st."
Since the first draft in 1985, numerous players have found their way to the NBA via the CBA draft, including current talents: David Wesley (Sioux Falls '92), New Orleans Hornets; Chucky Atkins (Oklahoma City '96), Detroit Pistons; Moochie Norris (Florida '96), Houston Rockets; Nets; Troy Hudson (Yakima '97), Orlando Magic; Adrian Griffin (Connecticut '96), Dallas Mavericks; Emanuel Davis (Quad City '91), Atlanta Hawks; Voshon Lenard (Oklahoma City '95), Denver Nuggets; Chris Childs (Rapid City '89) and Aaron Williams (Grand Rapids '93), New Jersey Nets.
Additionally, seven of the 10 All-CBA first and second team members last season are former CBA draft picks, including NBA call-ups Randy Livingston (Seattle Supersonics) and Leon Smith (Atlanta Hawks).
The oldest basketball league in the world tips off its 57th campaign on Friday, Nov. 15th, when Mims and the Sun Kings travel to Bismarck, N.D. to battle the 2002 CBA Champion Dakota Wizards.
