Grand Rapids Hoops News Release
The Yakima Sun Kings easily defeated the Grand Rapids Hoops, 125-103, on Friday night at the Yakima Valley Sun Dome. The Hoops struggled early and often as they suffered another setback in their attempt to secure the final playoff berth in the American Conference as the Sun Kings earned all seven quarter points.
Grand Rapids (20-24) lost for the sixth time in their last seven road games as they suffered their first quarter point shutout of the season. They currently trail the Gary Steelheads by three quarter points with five games remaining.
Jerald Honeycutt (6-17 FG) and Lazarus Sims (6-9 FG), who each contributed 16 points, led the Hoops in defeat. Four others scored in double figures for Grand Rapids, while Olden Polynice led the team with 11 rebounds. The Hoops once again were unable to find their shooting touch, as they connected on just 40-94 FG (.426) on the night.
Yakima (28-15) stormed out to a 59-46 halftime lead as Darrick Martin scored 21 of his game-high 28 points in the first two quarters. Yakima connected on 27-49 FG (.551) in the first half, while the Hoops, on the other hand, made just 19 of 44 field goals (.432).
The Sun Kings put the game away early, as Fred Vinson registered 14 points in the third quarter to help build Yakima's lead to as large as 20 points. The Hoops trailed 91-75 after three quarters, despite Alex Scales scoring 12 of his 15 points in the frame.
The fourth quarter was more of the same, as the Sun Kings lead swelled to as many as 26 points before settling for the final 22-point margin of victory.
Yakima was led by Martin's 28 points and 15 assists, while Vinson finished up with 26 points. Mitchell Butler also contributed 21 points for the Sun Kings, while Ike Harmon added 17 points and 16 rebounds and Michigan State-alum Anthony Miller 17 points and 14 rebounds.
The same two teams square off again on Saturday night at the Yakima Valley Sun Dome. Tip-off is scheduled for 10:05 p.m. EST.
