JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (March 4, 2015) - Local SUBWAY restaurants are partnering with the Jacksonville Armada FC, Jacksonville's new professional North American Soccer League team, to launch the Armada Healthy Heroes program, an initiative that aims to combat childhood obesity by encouraging students across the region to increase their physical activity. The program includes player appearances at local schools. It also rewards students, as well as teachers who are promoting increased levels of physical activity, with tickets to soccer matches throughout the season.

"Childhood obesity is one of the greatest challenges facing our nation's youth," said Patty Hetrick, Board Chair for SUBWAY® restaurants of Jacksonville. "If we are to reverse this alarming trend, we must teach our children the importance of participating in daily physical activities and making healthy food choices. Our partnership with the Armada FC gives us yet another way to reach students with this very important message."

Every Monday during a home match week during the 2015 spring and fall seasons, Armada FC players along with a SUBWAY representative will make an appearance at one elementary or middle school. During their visit, the Armada FC players will encourage students to become physically active by running them through a series of soccer drills, while SUBWAY representatives help students learn to make healthier eating choices.

In addition to the visit, the school will receive 44 tickets to the upcoming Armada FC match to reward students for their healthy activities.

Through the Armada Healthy Heroes Program, more than 800 students will be invited to attend a soccer match, which will hopefully inspire them to regularly participate in some form of physical activity.

Childhood obesity is an epidemic that has increased dramatically over the last decade. Florida ranks 35th in the nation for childhood obesity with 33.1% of children ages 10-17 being overweight or obese-that is higher than the national percentage which is 30.6%. Creating an environment that encourages healthy eating and exercise can be a helpful way to alleviate childhood obesity and improve the overall well-being of children.
