Atlanta Silverbacks News Release

The Atlanta Silverbacks Women kicked off their 2011 W-League season with a dominant performance at home Saturday night, knocking off the Dayton Dutch Lions, 3-0, at Atlanta Silverbacks Park.

The Silverbacks set the tone offensively in the opening minutes, with forward Tiffani Turpin nearly giving the home team an early lead. The Alabama native put a shot past Dayton goalkeeper Kristin McFadden, but her shot rattled the post before being cleared away.

It didn't take long, however, for Turpin to find the net. Silverbacks midfielder Alexa Newfield played a pass into Turpin, who slotted a close-range effort past McFadden to give the Silverbacks a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute.

Dayton, playing in its first W-League season, had a tough time getting possession away from the Silverbacks. Midfielder Megan Tomlinson came close to making the score 2-0 in the 51st minute, but a pass fell just out of her reach and into the hands of McFadden.

The Silverbacks added to their lead in the 74th minute when Tomlinson converted a pass from midfielder Rebecca Nolin. That goal came at the end of a frenzy in front of the Dayton net, during which midfielder Jamie Pollock knocked a header off the crossbar.

Nearly five minutes later, Turpin poked in an effort from two yards out to increase the Silverbacks lead to 3-0. The goal was the 21-year-old's second of the game, putting the season opener out of reach for the visitors.

The Silverbacks Women's next game is May 20 on the road against the Charlotte Lady Eagles. The Women return home to face Charlotte again on June 3.
