Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC News Release
PITTSBURGH - Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC downed Akron University, 4-2, in a high scoring game at Highmark Stadium.
The Hounds notched two goals apiece in each half, with Kevin Kerr (37') and Romeo Parkes (42') supplying the firepower in the first 45 minutes and Dennis Chin (62') and Joseph Holland (88') following suit in the second half.
Action picked up late in the first half with the Zips capturing the first tally of the game from a shot inside the box in the 32nd minute.
Pittsburgh responded quickly by scoring two goals in only four minutes to re-take the lead.
First, Kerr was sprung on a breakaway by forward Neco Brett, eventually tallying off a rebound from his owned blocked shot, flicking the ball over the Akron goalkeeper's head in the 37th minute. Brett again factored in the scoring only minutes later, working a give-and-go with Parkes that saw the latter beat the keeper off a shot near the penalty marker.
The lead proved to be short-lived though, as Akron tied the game in the 42nd minute to lock the score at 2-2 heading into halftime.
The Hounds picked up play considerably in the second half with strong bouts of possession that eventually led to the go-ahead goal in the 62nd minute. Coming off a corner, defender Nick Groenewold was able to push the ball past the keeper and across the box to Chin, who wasted no time cashing in on the open frame.
Scoring wrapped up with a bang in the closing minutes of the match, as Holland fired a beautiful take off the free kick from 25 yards out.
Preseason action continues next week, as Riverhounds SC hits the road for the first time, heading across the city to play the University of Pittsburgh at 7 p.m. on March 2 at Ambrose Urbanic Field. For more information on the preseason so far for the Hounds, visit Riverhounds.com.
