Strong Pitching Pushes Threshers Past Hammerheads in Shutout Win

WEST PALM BEACH, FL - Shutout pitching and a five-run third inning from the Clearwater Threshers (63-30, 19-9) secured a 7-0 victory over the Jupiter Hammerheads (49-45, 14-14) on Thursday night at the Ballpark of the Palm Beaches. The Threshers have a day off on Friday before returning to West Palm Beach for a Saturday night showdown against the Hammerheads.

Cade Fergus became the Threshers first baserunner in the third inning when he reached on a one-out walk. Emaarion Boyd followed with a single off Hammerheads starter Cole Kirschsieper and Justin Crawford loaded the bases with a walk. With two outs in the inning, Bryan Rincon delivered the first two runs of the game on an RBI single. Otto Kemp then cleared the bases with a three-run home run to centerfield that grew the lead to 5-0.

Boyd knocked an infield single up the middle off Hammerheads reliever Chris Mokma with one out in the seventh. He stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by Jupiter's catcher Jan Mercado. With two outs in the frame, Felix Reyes extended the Threshers lead to 6-0 with an RBI single into left field.

With one out in the eighth inning, the Threshers bats hit three straight singles off Hammerheads reliever Manuel Medina. Cole Moore singled and then moved to third on a knock by Ryan Leitch before Ricardo Rosario singled Moore home to extend the Threshers lead to 7-0. Wen-Hui Pan struck out the side in the ninth to seal the 7-0 victory for the Threshers.

Jonathan Petit tossed 4.0 shutout innings with two strikeouts and allowed four hits and two walks in a no-decision. Eiberson Castellano threw 2.0 scoreless frames with three hits and three strikeouts. Josh Bortka walked two in 1.0 scoreless and hitless inning. Pan shut out the Hammerheads in the final 2.0 innings with one walk and three strikeouts without allowing a hit.

Clearwater took their ninth shutout victory of the season...Kemp homered in back-to-back games for the second time this season...Boyd was replaced by Troy Schreffler as a pinch-runner in the eighth...Bortka has not allowed a run in his last three outings and 6.1 innings...Petit's last two starts have ended in a Threshers shutout win...Rincon became the fifth Thresher this season with 20 or more stolen bases...He also tied his career-high with his tenth two-hit game...The Threshers continue their six-game series against the Jupiter Hammerheads (Single-A, Marlins) on Saturday, July 29 after a day off on Friday...
