Strong Island Sound News Release
PATCHOGUE, NY - Members of the Strong Island Sound have continued their winning ways on the playground courts of New York City this summer. Led by Head Coach Dytanya Mixson along with top assistants Peter Wehye and Ray Copper, the X-Men (Coach Mixson's longstanding NY tournament team) are at or near the top of many major tournaments. At the world-famous Entertainers Basketball Classic held at Holcombe Rucker Memorial Park, the X-Men are 5-1 and tied for first place after defeating Jolt 103-100 on Wednesday. Leading the way for the X-Men was Reggie Roberson, who was in Sound camp two years ago and is expected to be on the team this upcoming season, with 28 points. Ex-Sound guard Nate Brown followed that up with 22 points and a game high eight assists. In other action from this week, former Sound players Phil Grant and Miguel Millien combined for 28 points as co-leader HUNC Records fell to EBC Dream Team 78-77.
Over at Orchard Beach in the Bronx the X-Men are finding similar success at Hoops in the Sun (H.I.T.S.). Currently tied for first with two other teams at 5-1, X-Men won by forfeit after Enterprise did not have a team ready for their game on Saturday.
At Hunter College, where arguably the "realest" summertime basketball goes down during the annual Nike Pro City Tournament, the X-Men were led by one of the most prolific scorers in Sound history, Mike Campbell, who had 28 points, eight rebounds and seven assists in a 129-124 victory over Prime Time. Coach Mixson has the X-Men sitting at 4-2, primed for the playoffs in his first season at Pro City.
Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
