
Strikers Unbeaten Streak Snapped in New York

Hempstead, NY (August 2, 2015) - The Fort Lauderdale Strikers' Empire State woes continued Sunday afternoon with a 2-0 lost to the New York Cosmos in North American Soccer League action at Hempstead's James M. Shuart Stadium. Fort Lauderdale remains winless on the road against the Cosmos, dropping its third decision to the the New York side since their return to the NASL in 2013.
The loss snaps a five-game unbeaten streak for the Strikers that began with a win in the NASL Spring Season finale and included the first four games following the return of Head Coach Günter Kronsteiner.
New York scored both of its goals in the first half in a match in which they controlled possession 56 percent to 44 percent.
The first goal came in the 27th minute when defender Hunter Freeman's crossing shot from the right channel lopped over the head of Strikers' goalkeeper Josh Ford and into the far corner of the net.
Leo Fernandes netted the second and final score when he slid the ball past Ford after taking a pass from Raúl while on the run.
Sunday's shutout is the third time the Red & Gold have been held scoreless in 2015. The first was also at the hands of the Cosmos -- a 1-0 loss on April 4 to start the 2015 NASL season. The Strikers second blanking came on May 16, a 1-0 decision at Tampa Bay.
Fort Lauderdale will travel directly to Atlanta to prepare for a match Wednesday (August 5) at the Silverbacks. The Strikers will return to home action when they play host to the Cosmos at Lockhart Stadium next Saturday (August 8). Both matches are 7:30 p.m. EDT starts.
