EDMONTON, AB - FC Edmonton (2W-2D-2L) suffered a 1-0 defeat against North American Soccer League (NASL) leaders Ottawa Fury FC (5W-1D-0L) in the match presented by Heritage Landing at Parsons Creek and StoneCreek Communities at Shell Place in Fort McMurray.

Fury defender Rafael Alves scored the lone goal of the match deep into injury time to break the scoreless deadlock and steal all three points. The victory is their first over Edmonton in four matches this year.

Ottawa Fury FC had the first goal scoring opportunity of the match on four minutes. Brazilian Striker Oliver Minatel received a cross from the left wing and attempted to place the ball in the bottom corner, but Eddies goalkeeper Matt VanOekel was able to reach it and stop the danger.

The Eddies responded one minute later, when newly signed midfielder Dustin Corea cut in from right side towards the box, but his powerful shot went straight to Ottawa 'keeper Romuald Peiser.

Ottawa reapplied the pressure with back-to-back chances by striker Tom Heinemann on 30 minutes. Eddies defender Kareem Moses gave the ball away on the edge of the box and Heinemann shot the ball on target but VanOekel parried it away for a corner kick. The resulting corner kick led to a scramble inside the box and Cristian Raudales and VanOekel combined to stop Heinemann's dangerous shot.

Both sides would head into the dressing room after a scoreless first half.

The Eddies opened the second half on the front foot with Corea's second chance of the match, but his shot was quickly blocked by the Ottawa defence.

Fury nearly took the lead on 77 minutes when Julian De Guzman's shot went past VanOekel, but Fordyce made a goal line clearance to preserve the 0-0 score for the time being.

Just when the match appeared to be heading towards a draw, Ottawa took the lead after Alves' header went off the post and in to win the match for Ottawa.

"We were not good enough going forward," Eddies head coach Colin Miller said. "Ottawa are very well organized. I didn't think we deserved to lose. A draw would have been a fair result here."

FC Edmonton face a quick turnaround and take on Indy Eleven next Wednesday, August 5. Kick off is set for 7:00 p.m. MT at Clarke Field. The match will be streamed locally on City TV and on ESPN3 in the United States. Get tickets to the match HERE. For more information, visit www.fcedmonton.com.
