Strikers to Face Laredo Heat at Home in Third Round of US Open Cup on May 28th

Fort Lauderdale, FL (May 16, 2014) - The Fort Lauderdale Strikers will be facing the Laredo Heat in the third round of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup on Wednesday, May 28th at 7:30 p.m. at Lockhart Stadium. Tickets to the match are now on sale. Should the Strikers win they would then take on the Houston Dynamo of MLS in the fourth round of the US Open Cup the week of June 10-18 at BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston, Tx. The overall winner of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup earns a spot in the CONCACAF Champions League.

The game is a rematch of last year's second round match when the Strikers faced the Laredo Heat at Lockhart Stadium and played them to a 1-1 draw in regular time. The Strikers went on to win the game on penalty kicks as Strikers goalkeeper Matt Glaeser was able to stop two Laredo shots in a row and Toni Stahl clinched the win for the home team. The Strikers then went on to take on FC Dallas of MLS and after going into the locker-room with a 0-0 tie, they gave up two second-half goals to the MLS squad and were eliminated from the US Open Cup 2-0.

The 101st edition of the tournament features 80 teams, an increase from the then-record 68 that took the field last year.
