Silverbacks One Win Away from Hosting MLS Side Real Salt Lake
May 16, 2014 - North American Soccer League (NASL)
Atlanta Silverbacks News Release
The Atlanta Silverbacks are one win away from hosting a Major League Soccer (MLS) team at Atlanta Silverbacks Park. U.S. Soccer released the potential pairings for the fourth round of the 2014 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Friday afternoon, revealing that the Silverbacks could host Real Salt Lake in June.
The Silverbacks will only host Real Salt Lake, who reached last year's Cup final, if they get past National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) side Chattanooga FC in the third round of the tournament on May 28. The gritty NPSL side already topped one professional team in the Cup so far, knocking off USL Pro's Wilmington Hammerheads earlier this week to clinch the opportunity to host the Silverbacks later this month.
Should the Silverbacks bring back a win from Chattanooga, they will host a MLS team for the first time ever at Atlanta Silverbacks Park. Interestingly enough, the Silverbacks and Real Salt Lake met last year in the Cup, with the latter notching a 3-2 overtime win in the tournament's third round at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah.
More details on this potential matchup will be released when they become available.
