FORT LAUDERDALE (March 21, 2013) - The Fort Lauderdale Strikers have signed Brazilian-born midfielder Rubens Pinheiro for the 2013 season. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
"Rubens is a player we're excited to add to our group," said head coach Daryl Shore. "We expect him to come in and compete for minutes right away as well as add depth to our roster."
Pinheiro, 23, has played professionally in Brazil, most recently with Mato Grosso do Sul in 2011, playing 20 games with the team in the Brazilian state sharing a border with both Paraguay and Bolivia. Pinheiro also had stints with Gremio Osasco and Red Bull Brasil.
As a youth player, he spent three years in the Corinthians academy from 2004 to 2006, as well as Banespa in 2007. He will wear the number 25 for the Strikers this season.
Fort Lauderdale concludes the series of collegiate friendlies this Saturday, March 23 against Florida Atlantic University. Tickets are $5 for adults. Children under 13, wearing their club jersey, are admitted free, as are FAU students and staff. At halftime, fans will have a chance to participate in the Flying High Soccer Ball Kick Contest.
