FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (March 21, 2013) - The Fort Lauderdale Strikers defeated Nova Southeastern University (NSU) 5-0 Wednesday, March 20, at the NSU Soccer Field in Davie, Fla. Stefan Dimitrov scored a hat-trick for the Strikers, while David Foley and Andy Herron each registered a goal in their preseason debuts.
With the win, the Strikers are 5-0 in five preseason matches. The team is yet to allow a single goal in preseason.
"I thought we were sharp and defended pretty well," said head coach Daryl Shore. "All in all we are pleased with the effort and happy we did well with our chances."
Dimitrov opened the scoring for the Strikers in the 16th minute. Matt Glaeser started the play with a long throw to Anderson in the center of midfield, who then sent Foley running down the right. Foley's low cross was deftly tucked away.
"I thought our first goal was one of the best counter attacks I've seen in a long time, as far as getting the ball from Matt [Glaeser] all the way up to the goal," said Shore.
The forward bagged his second of the night on a full volley, smashing the ball into the roof of the net from inside the box to double the Strikers' lead.
David Foley-making his unofficial debut for the Strikers-made it 3-0 on the stroke of halftime with a tap-in. Just minutes earlier Foley stepped up to take a penalty kick after being pulled down in the box, but Giombetti guessed correctly to deny the former Puerto Rico Islander.
Dimitrov completed his hat-trick after tucking away the Strikers fourth goal on the night from close range. The Bulgarian faked out the keeper after finding himself in a one-on-one situation following a delicate chipped through ball from Anderson on the edge of the box.
Andy Herron scored his first of the preseason following a give-and-go with Stefan Dimitrov on the edge of the area. The Costa Rican faked the keeper and slotted the ball into the open net.
Glaeser, though largely untested, earned antother clean sheet. The Strikers have outscored teams by a combined 15-0 in five preseason matches this season.
Fort Lauderdale concludes the series of collegiate friendlies this Saturday, March 23 against Florida Atlantic University. Tickets are $5 for adults. Children under 13, wearing their club jersey, are admitted free, as are FAU students and staff. At halftime, fans will have a chance to participate in the Flying High Soccer Ball Kick Contest. Contestants will compete to see who has the furthest kick. The Owls and Strikers will have a post-game autograph session at the field.
