Fort Lauderdale Strikers News Release
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (Wednesday, March 18, 2015) - The Fort Lauderdale Strikers today announced the signing of Brazil international and Flamengo captain Leonardo da Silva Moura, widely known as Léo Moura, pending an international transfer clearance.
Moura, 36, spent the last 10 years with Clube de Regatas do Flamengo, the popular club in Brazil. He played 519 games, scored 47 goals and won nine titles total during his tenure with the fabled club. He served as captain of the Rio de Janeiro-based club from 2010 until his departure in March 2015.
"We are really happy with this signing," said Strikers Soccer/Partner Andre Chaves. "He is going to be a leader on and off the field, and very popular with his teammates and Strikers' fans throughout the community. Technically, Léo is a solid player -- a maestro on the field. He brings a wealth of experience with one of top teams in Brazil."
A right back during most of his time with Flamengo, Moura is expected to play in the center of midfield for the Strikers. He will wear the heralded number 10 jersey in a nod to his decade with Flamengo.
Moura represented the Brazilian national team on one occasion. He earned his sole cap for the Seleção Brasileira in a friendly match against Ireland in February 2008.
Flamengo held a testimonial match for their departing captain against Uruguayan side Nacional at the Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro on March 4, 2015. Léo Moura registered an assist as Flamengo won 2-0 in front of 30,620 supporters.
Prior to joining Flamengo, Moura suited up for Brazilian sides Linhares, Vasco da Gama, Palmeiras, São Paulo, and Fluminense, and in Europe with Beerschot AC, ADO Den Haag and S.C. Braga. Moura started his career with Botafogo.
The Strikers open up the 2015 NASL Spring Season on April 4 against the New York Cosmos at Lockhart Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Tickets to the match start at just $10 and are are available at Strikers.com.
