Fort Lauderdale Strikers News Release
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (Wednesday) - On a stormy night at Michael A. Carroll Stadium in Indianapolis, the Fort Lauderdale Strikers fell to Indy Eleven by a score of 3-0.
Lightning storms delayed kickoff -- originally scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET -- by more than three hours. When Indy Eleven finally got the game underway, it was 10:46 p.m.
Indy Eleven stormed to a 3-0 first half lead thanks to goals by Eamon Zayed, Duke Lacroix and Greg Janicki. A solid second-half performance by the Strikers kept the hosts off the scoreboard in the second 45 minutes of the match.
Things went from bad to worse for the Strikers in the 41st minute of the match when forward Geison Moura was issued his marching orders following a second bookable challenge. Fort Lauderdale was forced to play the majority of the match shorthanded.
Zayed opened the scoring with a tap in at the far post just ten minutes in. A cross on the left by Nicki Paterson sailed over the head of PC to the forward, who was unmarked at the far post.
Lacroix doubled the advantage with a finish past Diego Restrepo in the 21st minute after racing past Gabriel and into the box. Indy captain Janicki headed home from a Paterson corner kick to make it 3-0 before halftime.
The Strikers return home to Lockhart Stadium on Saturday, July 16, to face the Carolina RailHawks before travelling to Chicago to take on Major League Soccer's Chicago Fire in the Quarterfinals of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup the following Wednesday.
