SIOUX FALLS, SD - The Sioux Falls Storm moved to 5-4 after a 31-21 win against the Green Bay Blizzard on Sunday, July 18.
The first quarter was a defensive battle with each team having a turnover. The first turnover was a fumble by Green Bay recovered by Storm newcomer Cory Thomas. Green Bay was the first to score with a 19-yard field goal by Jeff Budzien, giving the Blizzard a 0-3 lead. The Storm quickly answered with a 11-yard rushing touchdown by Nate Chavious, putting the Storm on top 7-3. Lorenzo Brown ended the quarter with an interception.
The Storm would be the only team to score in the second quarter, the Storm led 21-3 heading into the half. Lorenzo Brown rushed for both touchdowns.
The third quarter was a field goal frenzy. The Storm began the quarter by extending their lead to 24-3 after a 30-yard field goal by Chase Vinatieri. The Blizzard answered with a 43-yard field goal by Jeff Budzien, ending the quarter with a Storm 24-6 lead.
The Blizzard would come alive late in the fourth quarter with two touchdowns in the last two minutes. The first touchdown was an eight-yard touchdown pass from Brook Bolles to Kezlow Smith, bringing the score to 24-13. The Storm answered with a two-yard rushing touchdown by Nate Chavious, putting the Storm on top 31-13. The Blizzard would end the game with a 25-yard touchdown pass from Brook Bolles to Keshaun Taylor, bringing the final score to 31-21.
Storm quarterback Lorenzo Brown completed 12 passes for 73 yards and one interception. Brown also rushed for 33 yards and two touchdowns. Running back Nate Chavious rushed for 27 yards and two touchdowns. Wide receivers Brandon Sheperd had 31 reception yards, Alonzo Moore had 20 reception yards and Jordan Smith had 11 reception yards. Linebacker Marquis Hendrix led the Thunder Defense with eight total tackles and one tackle for loss. Defensive linemen David Marshall had two tackles for loss, one sack and one pass break-up. Kicker Chase Vinatieri made all four extra points and one field goal.
The Sioux Falls Storm (5-4) will travel to face rival Arizona Rattlers (7-2) on Saturday, July 24.
