Storm to Play Exhibition Game at Three Oaks in Summerside

October 6, 2014 - National Basketball League of Canada (NBL Canada)
Island Storm News Release

(Charlottetown, PE) The Island STORM of the NBL Canada announced today they will play their only home exhibition game this year at Three Oaks Senior High School in Summerside. The game will be played Tuesday October 28th starting at 7 pm against the Saint John Mill Rats.

All proceeds from the exhibition game, including admissions and 50-50 tickets, will go toward the "In Our Own Backyard" Program at Three Oaks. This program identifies students at the school who are not able to enjoy breakfast or lunch. Three Oaks High School Principal Nicole Haire says the program has become very important at the school, "We have seen marked improvement in the school performance of students who were not eating before, but now are. Meeting their basic needs gives them a better shot at success because when you are focusing on being hungry, you can't focus on school work." Haire went on to say the exhibition game will be a terrific help to an important program, "In the past, we have received some funding from the Breakfast for Learning program. We received notice that we will not be receiving any funding this year because their resources cannot meet the needs of all the schools. Having the Island STORM play their only exhibition game at our school and having all funds from the game go toward this program is so important to us"

Island STORM owner Duncan Shaw said he heard Nicole Haire interviewed on CBC Island Morning recently and thought about taking the exhibition game to Three Oaks. "When I heard Nicole speak so passionately about the this program I immediately thought the STORM could help. When we brought this franchise to Prince Edward Island 4 years ago we not only wanted to put a quality, fun, and entertaining product on the court but we also wanted to use the STORM as a vehicle to help raise funds for worthy causes and get involved with programs important to Islanders. I think we've been successful to date with helping raise over $225,000 for non-profits and getting involved with programs, such as our partnership with the PEI Department of Education on the "Reading Up a STORM" program where our players go into Island schools and read to students."

Tickets for the STORM/Mill Rats game on October 28th are $5 each and on sale at Three Oaks Senior High School in Summerside. Every cent of the $5 admission goes toward the "In Our Own Backyard" program at the school. As an added bonus, each ticket purchased to exhibition game at Three Oaks High School will also receive a voucher good for a free ticket to the Island STORM home opener Thursday November 6th at 7 pm at Eastlink Centre in Charlottetown.
