Great Lakes Storm News Release
Birch Run, MI (January 27, 2005) â The Great Lakes Storm won the game tonight against the Gary Steelheads 135-127 (5.5, 1.5) to move to 19-11 on the season. The Storm swept the three straight home games against the Steelheads to remain in first place. Gary failed to gain ground in the standings as they dropped to 11-16 on the season.
Playing Gary for the third straight home contest, Coach Bergman knew it would be tough to beat them for the fourth straight time overall. Both teams traded baskets in the first quarter as there were seven ties and neither team led by more than three points. The Storm would take the first quarter 31-28 behind 12 points from Mark Jones. The Storm came out on fire in second quarter as Ezra Williams went 4-for-5 from downtown to increase the Storm lead to 12 points at halftime, as the Storm went into the locker room winning 66-54, along with winning the quarter 35-26. Gary would not go away as they trimmed the lead to four points with just over three minutes to go in the third quarter. They would go into the fourth quarter trailing 102-94, as they won the third quarter 40-36 behind 11 points from Shelly Clark. The Storm held on to the double digit lead and Jimmie "Snap" Hunter's 29 second half points were not enough to overcome the deficit as the Storm won the game and tied the quarter on a driving Jermaine Jackson lay-up with 0.5 seconds on the clock.
The Storm's next game is on Saturday, January 29th on the road against the Gary Steelheads. Tip-off is set for 7:05 at the Genesis Convention Center.
Game Highlights:
STORM: Ezra Williams 26 points, 8 rebounds
Jermaine Jackson 23 points, 16 assists
GARY: Jimmie Hunter 36 points, 11-for-12 FT
