Storm Signs Workhorse Power Forward
October 2, 2013 - National Basketball League of Canada (NBL Canada)
Island Storm News Release
Veteran Power Forward Amani Daanish is the latest player to be added to the Island Storm's expanding training camp roster, pending FIBA clearance.
Daanish, a 6'8", 220 lbs Los Angeles native, graduated from Indiana State University in 2005. During his Senior Year, he averaged 11.0 points and 6.6 rebounds per game, while shooting 46.5% from the floor.
Storm Head Coach Joe Salerno says Daanish is a hardworking player who will be a great team player for the franchise.
"Amani is exactly the type of Power Forward we were looking for this summer. He has a motor that just doesn't quit. He plays extremely hard every possession, can go inside and be physical, but can also step out and play 15-18 feet from the basket. He is a tremendous athlete, and a veteran who can bring a lot of overseas experience to our ball club. The best way I could describe Amani Daanish would be a Defensive End in a pair of basketball shorts. I love his aggressive style of play, his relentless work ethic on the floor, and his versatility. He will fit right in with our ball club."
Daanish was drafted by the Oshawa Power 12th overall in the 2012 NBL Canada entry draft and played 12 games with the team before leaving in December to play Division 1 ball in Iraq. In Iraq, Daanish averaged 40 minutes of play, 19 points, 12.5 rebounds, 5 steals, 4 assists, and 1.5 blocks per game.
During his stint with the Power, Daanish averaged 15.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game, while shooting 45% from the floor. He was also 78% from the foul line.
Daanish says, "I'm looking to bring the same leadership I had with the Oshawa Power to the Island Storm. I am confident Coach Salerno has put together a strong nucleus of players that each should contribute to a Championship season."
In addition to playing pro ball in Iraq, Daanish has also played in Japan, Iceland, Finland, and Canada. He's also had workouts with multiple NBA teams, such as the Memphis Grizzlies, Golden State Warriors, LA Lakers & Clippers, and the New Orleans Hornets.
The Storm open their training camp in mid-October, with an exhibition game at home (at UPEI) on Friday, October 25 vs the Saint John Mill Rats. The Storm will then travel for another pre-season contest versus the Halifax Rainmen on Sunday, October 27.
