Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release

Guelph, ON- The Mississauga St. Michael's Majors opened up a three goal lead on the Guelph Storm only to let it slip away, losing 6-5 and ending their ten game winning streak. The loss drops the Majors to 23-3-0-1 on the season and marks their first regulation loss since October 22nd.

The game featured two teams heading in different directions, the Majors on a ten game winning streak and leaders in the Eastern Conference against the Storm, losers of seven straight games. Mississauga jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening period but the Storm fought back to pull within one and eventually take the lead in the third period and then held off a late comeback attempt by Mississauga. Justin Shugg put the Majors ahead on the power play at 7:03 of the first period after his shot hit off the post and deflected in off a Storm defender to make it 1-0. The power play unit struck again at 13:07 when Stuart Percy scored his second of the season. Percy was waiting on the doorstep and put in Riley Brace's cross ice pass to make it 2-0. The shorthanded unit got in on the action for the Majors as Rob Flick won the puck deep in the Storm zone and found Joseph Cramarossa out front to make it 3-0. The Storm responded under a minute later when Taylor Beck beat JP Anderson to cut the lead to 3-1. Michael Latta jumped on the loose puck and scored his first of three goals in the closing seconds on the power play to pull the Storm within one and make it 3-2 for the Majors after the first period.

Peter Holland beat JP Anderson to score shorthanded at 5:53 into the second period to tie the game up at 3-3, that would be all the scoring for the period and set up a dramatic third period. Tyler Carroll put Guelph ahead at just 1:03 of the third period to make it 4-3. Michael Latta grabbed his second goal at 6:02 on the power play to increase the Storm's lead to 5-3. Just over seven minutes in the dramatics started after a clean hit by Kerby Rychel resulted in a four minute double minor high sticking penalty. The replay clearly showed no stick made contact with the Guelph player but it was ruled a penalty and was charged to Derek Schoenmakers. The Storm could not capitalize on the advantage keeping things at 5-3. Justin Shugg scored his second goal of the game when he beat Brandon Foote high over the glove side to cut it to 5-4. The Majors pulled Anderson but gave up an empty netter to Latta to complete his hat-trick and make it 6-4. In the closing seconds a brawl ensued between both teams and a goalie fight started between Anderson and Foote. Both were finished for the game and both back-ups finished the game for the last 40 seconds. Riley Brace scored on a rocket shot with 16 seconds remaining but it would be as close as Mississauga would come to avoiding the upset.

Brandon Foote made 37 saves to earn the victory for Guelph. JP Anderson stopped 26 shots in a losing effort for the Majors. Mississauga will now travel to Niagara to play the IceDogs on Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. The Majors will then return home for two games next weekend. The Oshawa Generals come to the Hershey Centre on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and the Barrie Colts visit Mississauga next Sunday at 2:00 p.m. 2011 MasterCard Memorial Cup ticket packages are on sale now.
