Calgary Mustangs News Release
Hirschfeld Backup in Spurs 1-1 draw with Middlesbrough
Calgary Storm will begin their exhibition schedule with a game April 6 in Golden, Colorado against the Colorado Rapids of Major League Soccer. The game will be played at Colorado School of Mines' Brooks Field instead of the Rapids' home of Mile High Stadium in Denver. This is part of both clubs commitment to spreading high level soccer through the community. All proceeds from the match, free concert and post game media party will be donated to charity.
"This will be a good test for the players in our program to face a team in the highest echelon of North American soccer. Colorado has been keenly observing our progress and really wants to forge ties with us. We always need these types of networks in soccer. Hopefully this is the start of a long relationship between Storm and Rapids." said Thomas Niendorf, head coach of the A-League Calgary Storm.
Calgary Storm and Canadian Team National Goalkeeper Lars Hirschfeld continues to impress Tottenham Hotspur. The injury to starting Spurs and Scottish National Team goalkeeper Neil Sullivan, apparently incurred during France's 5-0 win over Scotland during midweek, resulted in Hirschfeld being moved into number 2 position today for the game away to Middlesbrough.
" Again, the work ethic and talent shown by Lars has created opportunities at Spurs. Lars is very positive at this point in time and this has been reflected in his performance. Spurs seem to have taken a genuine interest in Lars by preparing him for the intense atmosphere prevalent in the English Premiership. It is ironic that Kasey Keller, the U.S. National team goalkeeper and recent adversary in the Gold Cup, played the game for Spurs. Lars knows he can compete at this level . He now needs the chance." said Niendorf.
"Lars' chance will come. In the meantime, he has to continue to work hard in the Spurs reserve games. It cannot hurt Lars to sit next to Teddy Sheringham, who won the Champions League in 1999 with Manchester United, and Dean Richards, a recent 8.5 million pound transfer from Southampton, to see them, their mental preparation and commitment to success. This will only further the education of a young goalkeeper."
