Calgary Mustangs News Release

A 60 minute sleepwalk and the woodwork denied Calgary of the points versus Milwaukee in the last match of the season for the Mustangs.

Goals by Joe Hammes, Jamar Beasley, Marcelo Fontana, and Matt Schmidt were enough to power Milwaukee to a 4-2 decision over the Mustangs on Thursday evening.

Calgary replied with markers from Mike Pavicic and Mesut Mert.

Milwaukee opened the match brightly and tested Calgary keeper, Lutz Pfannenstiel, in the 5th minute. Pfannestiel was forced at full stretch to push the shot past the post for the corner.

On the ensuing corner kick, Milwaukee's Joe Hammes ran into the path of a perfect corner by Johnny Torres and headed the ball past a helpless Pfannenstiel.

Calgary tried to equalize in the 10th minute as Ernesto Zapata tested Milwaukee keeper, Jim Larkin, from 20 yards when it may have been a better option to pass to an open teammate.

Calgary managed to reply in the 23rd minute as Mike Pavicic had made a run from the back to run onto a perfect ball by Geert Brusselers and slipped a shot with the outside of his foot inside the right post.

Milwaukee took the lead again, eight minutes later, as Jamar Beasley laced a powerful volley from 16 yards past Pfannenstiel, after being sent through by a fine ball from Torres.

Beasley came close again in the 35th minute, but pushed a close-in shot wide of the mark after Todd Dusosky had made Pfannenstiel dive low to cut off a tight angle.

Two minutes later, Zapata came very close for Calgary when he latched onto a perfect cross by Jamie Auvigne, but his effort slipped achingly wide of the net.

HALFTIME SCORE – Calgary 1 – 2 Milwaukee

Milwaukee extended their lead shortly after the break as Fontana found himself on the end of some quality Milwaukee passing and only had to tap the ball in inside the six-yard box.

Conrad Smith's final touch of the ball nearly gave Calgary their second of the match, but his shot from left of goal only managed to bulge the side netting in the 58th minute.

Milwaukee's fourth goal of the match came courtesy of Matt Schmidt. Schmidt ran onto a brilliant pass by Todd Dusosky and slid the ball underneath a charging Pfannenstiel.

The combination of that goal and the bringing on of Nic Reyes and Nick Zuniga seemed to awaken the Mustangs from their slumber.

The 68th minute saw Calgary's second goal as Brusselers fed a perfect looping pass to Mesut Mert, who took one controlling touch and hammered a shot past a sprawling Larkin from 10 yards.

Alas, the crossbar would deny Calgary on two occasions and saw that the points would be enjoyed by Milwaukee on this night.

First Mert, then Brusselers, saw their fine shots rattle off the woodwork, just minutes apart, leaving the Mustangs players and fans shaking their heads in disbelief.

The final chance of the evening fell to Brusselers, as he was fed by Zuniga, but Larkin was equal to the task and tipped the shot past the post for a corner.
