SIOUX FALLS, SD - The Sioux Falls Storm traveled to face the Louisville Xtreme on Saturday, May 29. The game was close throughout but the Storm held off the Xtreme 49-43, improving the Storm's record to 2-1.
The first quarter was a back and forth battle. The Xtreme would score first with a 21-yard pass from Dalton Oliver to Desmond Maxwell to take an early 0-7 lead. The Storm quickly tied it up with a kickoff return by Nate Chavious. Xtreme kicker Derek Vacha hit a 17-yard field goal to go up 7-10. The quarter was end with a tie game at 10 after a 24-yard field goal by Storm kicker Chase Vinatieri.
The Xtreme would start the second quarter with a 22-yard field goal by Derek Vacha, putting the Xtreme up 10-13. The Storm ended the half with back-to-back scoring drives and a 20-13 lead; the first score was a 34-yard rushing touchdown by Nate Chavious then a 21-yard field goal by Chase Vinatieri.
The Storm started the third quarter with a 34-yard rushing touchdown by quarterback Tommy Armstrong and successful PAT by Chase Vinatieri, extending the Storm's lead to 27-13. The Xtreme would cut the lead to 27-20 after a 33-yard touchdown pass from Dalton Oliver to Todd Athey. The Storm ended the quarter with a 34-20 lead after a seven-yard rushing touchdown by quarterback Tommy Armstrong.
The Xtreme started the fourth quarter with three consecutive scoring drives to retake a 34-35 lead; the first scoring drive was a safety, then a 21-yard touchdown pass from Dalton Oliver to Todd Athey and then an eight-yard pass from Dalton Oliver to Desmond Maxwell. The Storm would then score back-to-back touchdowns to take a 49-35 lead; the first touchdown was a one-yard sweep by Brandon Sheperd and then a pick six by Jordan Baldwin. The Xtreme scored with 26 seconds remaining in the game with a nine-yard touchdown pass from Dalton Oliver to Todd Athey, bringing the score to 49-43. The Xtreme would try a on-side kick but it was recovered by the Storm and the Storm would run the clock out and emerge victorious.
Storm quarterback Tommy Armstrong completed 4 of 6 passes for 33 yards along with 62 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Running back Nate Chavious had 50 rushing yards and one touchdown. Wide receivers JoJo Gause had 13 reception yards, Brandon Sheperd had 28 reception yards and Damian Ford had nine reception yards. Linebacker Marquis Hendrix led the Thunder Defense with 12 total tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss. Defensive linemen Roosevelt Falls had 0.5 tackle for loss. Defensive backs Reid Harrison-Ducros had two pass break-ups while Solomon St. Pierre had one pass break-up and Famus Hasty had one interception and one touchdown.
The Sioux Falls Storm the road again next Saturday, June 5. The Storm will face the Bismarck Bucks at 6:05 PM. The game will be on watchstadium.com and the Storm will have a viewing party at Blue Rock Bar & Grill.
